Civil Litigation
As applied to the practice of law, civil litigation is the area of activity involving legal representation in all aspects of non-criminal matters that can eventuate to processes or law suits in any court or tribunal.
Criminal law is that body of law involving the state (government) proceeding against individuals (including incorporated organizations) for which there are penal consequences, whereas civil law concerns itself with non-criminal matters among private persons, including business entities, and governmental entities as well. Civil courts provide a forum for deciding disputes involving torts (such as accidents, negligence, and libel), business or contract disputes, property and title issues, the probate of wills, family and marital matters, bankruptcy and a score of other areas in which redress is needed for a grievance.
The purpose of civil law is to keep order in society by resolving disputes and righting wrongs without violence. Normally, the prevailing party in a civil action receives compensation in the form of money damages.
